Laotian Haircuts

A few weeks ago, Allan asked me to cut his hair.

Seeing as how I know NOTHING about cutting hair (I leave this to the professionals aka Renate and Lisa), and as far as I got was trimming his neck, he planned on getting a cut at some point on our trip.

That day was yesterday.

He found this cool barber shop directly across the Mekong River and instead of getting it done that night, he waited to the next day.

And barber shop was closed.  It was closed in the morning.  It was closed at 11.  It was closed at 1.

Allan's long locks.  Nice and curly
So, since his hair wasn't getting any shorter and he brought no hair product with him to even attempt a style, we found a beauty shop down the road.  We walked in to the entire salon yelling "Sabaidee" at us and were told to wait for 15 minutes.

The quick cut
15 minutes pass and Allan takes a seat in front of a large, rather dirty mirror.  The woman, who cuts hair while wearing a doctors mask, attempts small talk with both Allan and me.  She asks what he wants done with his hair and we both say "whatever you want".  To this, she laughs, a lot.

The new 'do
10 minutes flat and the cut is done.  Oh, and it only cost 60,000 Kip (including tip) which is roughly $6.50 USD.  Take that my stylist friends....ha

Oh, we walked passed the barber shop after leaving the beauty salon and it was open.  Go figure.

Because I am supposedly not posting enough pics of "us".  Here's me, sitting down to dinner

  1. Awe, thanks for the extra pictures!!! Allan's way of spending money is still all wrong though. The tea should have been $6.50, and the haircut $46!!!! xoxo
